Therapy
The therapeutic curriculum at KW Legacy Ranch is a signature of the entire program. The success of the ranch stems from combining our 3 core values of family, ranch, and legacy with intensive therapeutic services.
Therapy at KW Legacy Ranch takes place daily and on a continuous basis. Everything we do is designed with a therapeutic purpose in mind, and we are committed to using strong, evidence-based best practices.

Formal Therapy
Individual Therapy
Assessment and planning begin even before your child enrolls. Interviews are conducted with the parents over the phone or in person. If needed, additional information will be gathered from other professionals involved at home including therapists, doctors, teachers, coaches, religious leaders, etc. This cumulative information is used to establish an initial treatment plan for your child prior to arrival. Upon admission, your child is assigned their own personal counselor, a Masters Level Therapist, who will manage their treatment throughout the entire program. Every student’s plan is continually reviewed throughout progression in the program and attuned to fit their specific needs. Your child will receive individual, one-on-one counseling with their therapist every week. These opportunities provide a time to address issues in-depth.
Along with the individual sessions, the therapists at KW Legacy Ranch are involved in the day-to-day aspects of the program. Through these activities, the therapist will glean important information for the treatment planning and use of therapeutic techniques that will best serve your teen. Because students see their therapist in more circumstances than just an individual session each week, they feel more comfortable with them and are able to build stronger relationships. These relationships become the key to helping your child feel comfortable opening up and being completely honest.

Group Therapy
Your child will participate in regularly scheduled groups as well as impromptu groups every week. These process groups are held frequently and will be used to address topics or areas of concern that are unique to the students in the program at that specific time.
Students have the opportunity to participate in group counseling as part of the influential piece of their therapeutic program. During these groups, your child will learn how to interact with peers and how to hold their peers accountable. They will also be held accountable by their peers. These groups become an important part of your child’s learning experience while at the ranch and help the students prepare themselves to interact appropriately with their peers and family members upon returning home.

Family Therapy
Family involvement is considered an integral part of the KW Legacy Ranch program. You will interact weekly with your child’s therapist for updates about your teen’s progress as well as to discuss any issues your family is facing and then addressing possible solutions to those problems. You and the therapist will work together to give your family the tools needed to be successful.
Throughout your son's stay, your family will come to the ranch for in-person family therapy. These will be times to reunite with your son and continue to address issues that arise. You will be able to see their progress in-person and spend quality one-on-one time with them. You will also attend intensive family counseling, participate in parenting workshops, and join in actual ranch activities. Through these experiences, you will all be better equipped with additional skills and tools to use so that you can continue the momentum and success at home.
Additionally, you will be asked by the therapist to participate in our Parent Modules. The Parent Modules are therapeutic assignments that mirror some of the assignments your son will be doing while in treatment. These Modules also include learning healthy parenting techniques, positive communication methods, the importance of self work, building productive relationships, etc.

Therapy in a Natural Setting
The beauty of the ranch is that in addition to the formal counseling that takes place, therapy will also happen in a normal and natural setting. Many of our students have participated in outpatient therapy at home. Sometimes this has helped and other times it hasn’t seemed to make any difference. When outpatient therapy hasn’t been effective, it’s typically because the teen has either told the therapist what it is they think they want to hear, or they refuse to open up at all.
That’s where the ranch comes in. Therapy on the ranch can take place anytime, anywhere. The ranch provides a setting where the therapy isn’t forced. Teens don’t feel like they are being “therapized” on the ranch. They aren’t trying to learn the correct therapeutic terms to repeat back to the staff. When we are out working together, the opportunities for therapy present themselves naturally. Many times a resistant teen may not even realize that they are receiving treatment although change is beginning to take place in his life.
This method of treatment allows us as professionals to see your teen in a natural setting. They may tell their therapist one thing and then go out and do the opposite. When this is the case, we can correct those patterns immediately and help our students begin to see the inconsistency between their words and their actions. This constant encouragement helps bring about lasting change.

Animal-Assisted Therapy
The ranch animals play a integral part in our students’ therapy. Our students learn great responsibility through the proper care of the animals. They learn to give without expecting something in return. They learn that a job has to be done even if we don’t feel like it that day. They learn to help even when the animals don’t offer a thank you.
Additionally, interaction with the animals provides many other opportunities for therapy. The simple relationships that are formed between the students and the animals can provide excellent therapeutic insight into your teen’s needs. Animals can be exceptional aids in assisting with trauma, boundaries, attachment, anxiety, depression and much more. The students’ behavior with horses and cattle can provide insight into similar human behaviors such as nurturing, peer group behavior, and how pressure affects our relationships.
We consider the animals to be some of the best therapists around and will provide an amazing benefit to your son's healing while at the ranch.
